Apathy, thy name is Floyd County

Floyd County citizens had a chance Tuesday night to voice their thoughts on road improvements over the next six years. Thirteen residents showed up for a public hearing at the court house and seven spoke.

The hearing was over in 20 minutes.

So much for concerned citizens.

Part of the problem with Floyd is that we’re not as “connected” of a community as we could be. The only local news comes from a weekly newspaper whose website is anything but helpful to the area. We barely exist to the Roanoke Times, so when it comes to news, it’s harder to get the word out about things like upcoming meetings where we could voice an opinion. I’ve been here 20 years and still don’t subscribe to the Floyd Press. I pick it up when I come into town on Thursday or Friday.

We are a bedroom community to some extent with our people commuting outside the county for work, and they know more about what’s going on in the community where they work than the community where they live/sleep.

What’s the solution? A community-based website that really meets the needs of the county…
