Lady Buffs take district title, boys come very, very close
The Floyd County High School Lady Buffs varsity basketball team dominated the Three Rivers District title game in Christiansburg Friday night, trouncing Glenvar 79-45.
The boys team, in their first district final since 1998, came close to making it a sweep, losing to perennial district champion Radford by just two points: 61-59.
But the boys team, which generated enough points to keep going, will join the girls team in the regional playoffs.
The girls started slowly, trailing Glenvar by one point at the end of the second quarter but picked up the pace in typical style in the next three periods to pull away. The boys led by two points at the end of the first half but Radford took the lead in the third quarter and led for the rest of the evening. A late fourth quarter surge by the Buffaloes fell just short.
A great showing by two good teams and both squads should feel proud. Caleb Tanner of the boys team was honored after the game as the Three River District Player of the Year. More photos and Roger Mannon’s full story in next week’s Floyd Press.
