Into the darkness without power

Update: At 10:00 p.m. Wednesday night, 3,495 customers of Appalachian Power Company remained without power.

That figure topped the list of outages for the area.  Montgomery County was second with 1,506 and Carroll County third at 1,253.  Throughout Southwestern Virginia, the outages totaled 8,150.

At 6:50 p.m., Floyd County had more than 62 percent of its customers without power: 5,742.

Many have been out for 12 hours or more.

The power outages come in a snowfall that is not that serious by winter standards. Many areas had 3-4 inches at most and main roads are clear in most areas of the county.

In Southwestern Virginia, Appalachian Electric Power showed 13,849 customers in the dark at 6:50 p.m.

The utility says wet snow was more widespread than expected and has had to call in extra crews to repair damages.  Power may be out through Thanksgiving Day and into Black Friday.
