Floyd County’s power restored

Appalachian Power now claims all power outages in Floyd County are restored as of 6:00 p.m. Friday.

In a day that started with more than 1,000 customers remaining without power, the numbers dropped to around 500 near noon and then down to a little over 400 later.

At 6:02 p.m. the power utility said 144 customers still out in Dickenson County were the only remaining customers in the dark.

Floyd County led the outages from the start of blackouts on Wednesday when more than 5,500 — or 62 percent — of the county’s customer base went down and thousands remained without electricity for most of Thanksgiving Day.

AEP says the company “miscalculated” the amount of wet, heavy snow in a storm that — overall — was not considered that severe.  Most of Floyd County saw accumulations of 3-4 inches although some saw up to 10 inches.

The company also cited damage to electrical equipment from the storm.
