Lady Buffs win, boys lose

Floyd County High School’s Lady Buffaloes cruised to an easy semi-final win Conference 38 win over Giles County Tuesday night, thrashing the Spartans 80-44, setting up a tournament final against the Martinsville Bulldogs, who survived a close, hard-fought contest with James River 70-69.

The Lady Buffs and the Lady Bulldogs were scheduled to square off against at James River High School at Buchanan Wednesday night but an approaching winter storm forced postponement.

Martinsville also ended the season against the  Floyd boys’ varsity  Tuesday night at James River with an 84-50 victory over the Buffaloes.

With the girls’ semi-final win, the Lady Buffaloes qualify for the regional tournament but can open the tournament at home f they win the conference final.

But weather, which has already caused multiple post-season game postponements, was once again a major.

In the girls’ semi-final, the Lady Buffaloes led 29-9 at the end of the first quarter, 55-22 at the half and cruised with 12 players scoring, led by Ragan Wiseman with 15, Carley Lytton 14 and Riley Underwood 10.

Floyd also led in three-point goals with Lytton scoring two along with Michaela Thompson, Natalie Boothe, Emily Boothe and Hanah Belshan adding one apiece.

On the boys’ side, the Buffaloes ran into 6-foot-seven-inch center Devonnte Holland, who scored 28 points in the first half and finished the night with 41.

For Floyd,Will Cook led scoring with 17, the only Buffalo in double-digits.  Martinsville also outscored Floyd in three-pointers with six to the Buffs 2.

The boys finish the 2014-15 season 10-14 with several tough losses in close games, including two in overtime.  The Lady Buffs go into the Conference 38 title game at 20-3 and are in the region tournament with a win or loss.
