Floyd County High School’s Lady Buffaloes remember a last-second shot by the Gate City Blue Devils last year that knocked the heavily-favored Floyd team out of the regional playoffs and a trip to the final four for state championship.
And Gate City came armed for a repeat with a tough game plan that slowed down the Lady Buffs’ dominating offense. The Blue Devils led seven to five at the end of the first quarter, Floyd fought back to lead 18-7 at the half. Gate City ran up a lead in the third quarter before Floyd fought back and went into the final quarter leading by just two.
The game rocked with exchanges in the lead in the final quarter before Floyd took the lead with a minute and a half to go and then extended it by sinking 18 of 21 free throws and polishing off the night with a 53-41 victory.
The win puts the Lady Buffs in the regional final against undefeated Wise County Central Thursday night but, win or lose in that game, the team qualified for the final four in the state tournament next week in Richmond with the semi-final victory over Gate City.
Carley Lytton scored 16 points in the victory, followed by Natalie Boothe with 12. The Lady Buffs sank six three point shots.
