Doug - your post is a wonderful tribute to your mentor and friend and his well-deserved award from the VCCA. I am so glad that he received this recognition during his lifetime. Keep up the good work practicing all he taught you.

I think it's likely the Capitol Correspondents' dinner will also note the death of another of the Roanoke Times' greatest legacies - Marge Fisher. A number of us who were active in politics and government from the mid-70s forward are planning to gather in Roanoke in April for her memorial service. We'll laugh and cry and offer some toasts to a tough, intelligent, savvy and wonderfully sarcastic reporter and editorial writer. Most of all we'll just miss her as we have since she "left the building."

Thanks for the recollections Doug, 'tis splendid that Mr Carico recognized the duty and pleasure of mentoring you and others along. This training is well reflected in stories like your coverage of the Richmond/NOVA "reallocation" of school funding. With news, the first priority is informing readers. Keep it up!
