Yep, that’s snow on the ground out there.  About an inch or so.

If the weather prognosticators are right, the inch that starts the week will the followed at the end of the work period with 5-8 inches on Friday.

With the thermometer hovering just above freezing (35 degrees), the white stuff will melt slowly as Southwestern Virginia goes into two days of highs in the lower 30s and a low in Floyd County tonight of around five.

The outlook for the week:

  • A low of 14 degrees Sunday night;
  • Sunny and a high of about 22 on Monday, Martin Luther King’s birthday and an overnight low of five;
  • Sunny again on Tuesday with a high of 24 and a low of 12;
  • Warming up to 40 degrees on Wednesday and a low of 27 ;
  • Up to 45 degrees on Thursday and a low of 29 with a 30 percent chance of rain and/or snow;
  • A snow of 5-8 inches on Friday with a high of 33 and a low 0f 26;
  • Snow of less than an inch on Saturday with less than a inch of snow and a low of 22.

The following week is forecast of highs in the mid to upper 40s and lows around freezing with a change of warming to lower 50s and a low of 42 for the last day of the month — Jan. 31st.
