The twice-delayed Conference 38 – 2A playoffs kicked off between Floyd County High School’s Buffaloes against Giles Wednesday night at the FCHS gym where weather delays also brought two firsts in conference play: Floyd’s delayed basketball Homecoming and Senior night for the Giles Spartans.
In a game where Floyd lead early on but was often close for three quarters, the Buffaloes opened up the margin in the final period and won going away — 73-57 to advance to the conference semi-finals against the Bulldogs at Martinsville Friday.
Evan Davis scored 14 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in a game where four Buffaloes scored in double figures: Michael Osborne with 14, Jared Spence with 12 and Blake Hairston at 10.
Giles kept the game close with 11 three-point goals but the Buffaloes took control and sent the Spartans back to Pearisburg with their season over.
The Lady Buffaloes, who had a bye because they finished the season undefeated in district play and took the championship for Three Rivers, opens their conference play Thursday night at Martinsville Middle School against Giles, which beat James River Wednesday night.
