That championship season

030605wrestling3.jpgLorenzo Rios (above), the feisty 119-pound wrestling demon from Floyd County High School, finished fifth in the Virginia High School League State Championship Finals Saturday at Salem Civic Center. So did teammate Dustin Allen (left) in the 275-pound category.

Floyd’s seven-year-old wrestling program sent five grapplers to the state finals this year with Allen and Rios making it to Saturday’s semi-finals.

In Bristol, the Lady Buffs varsity basketball team’s hopes of making it to the State Finals in Richmond next week ended with a 61-53 loss to Gate City. Still, the girls’ team won the Three Rivers District Championship and enjoyed an incredible run.

I had a lot of fun photographing both teams this season, along with the boys’ basketball and the football teams. Next up: baseball, track and soccer.
