Feels a little like winter today but it won’t last

The “white stuff” sprinkling down from the sky this morning leaves a tinge of snow on the ground around the house but with the thermometer on the back porch reading 34 degrees, it won’t last.

The forecast for this Wednesday is for a “wintry mix” in the morning with temperatures in the mid 30s — a day more like winter than most we have had in recent 24-hour cycles here in the Blue Ridge.

Weather conditions must be a little worse west of us as Carroll County Schools are opening two hours late and Grayson County is closed.

According to the Blacksburg/Roanoke office of The National Weather Service, it might hit 40 degrees in the afternoon with precipitation ending by noon and a brief appearance of the sun just before darkness approaches around 6 p.m.

Expect lows in the 20s overnight with highs Thursday around 39 and then a return to more Spring-like conditions Friday with a high of 58, then 61 on Saturday and 62 Sunday accompanied by mostly sunny conditions.

The high might hit 70 on Monday and stay in the mid 60s or high 50s through next week as the winter that is not heads into its final days of February.

Looking ahead to the start of March, the long-range outlook calls for a high of 51 and a low of 30 for the first day of the third month of 2017.

Will March be the month that comes in like a lamb and goes out as a lion?

Only time, and a fickle Mother Nature, will tell.
