Snow’s embrace

022805snow3.jpg
022805snow4.jpgThe snow that fell today ran 6-10 inches in areas of Southwestern Virginia — a wet, heavy snow that coated the ground and trees, brought down limbs and clogged roads.

With temperatures predicted to drop below freezing tonight (and wind chills in the teens), Monday’s storm should be with us for most of the week.

There’s no business like snow business

022805snow2.jpgThe chirping alert started going off on my computer early Sunday. “Winter Storm Warning” Weatherbug proclaimed. Yeah, yeah, we’ve heard that before. But the warnings intensified during the day. Maybe this time they were right.

One last chance

022705moon2.jpgThe clouds of an approaching winter storm provide yet another setting for this week’s moon.

Sunlight

022605sunlight2.jpgLight breaks through the trees during my morning walk along Harvestwood Road near Sandy Flats. Temperate weather this winter has left the area greener than usual and some plants are already trying to bloom.

Victory streak ends

Floyd County High School’s girls varsity basketball team run of post-season victories came to an end Friday night with a 49-38 loss to old nemesis Radford.

One more moon

Couldn’t resist. God, the moon views this month have been great.

When the morning sun…

When the morning sun streaks across my room
And I’m wakened up from another dream of you

Jack Greene’s lyrics from the song But You Know I Love You seemed especially apt this morning as the sunlight filtered through the trees behind our home.

Yes I’m on the road once again it seems
And all I’ve left behind is a chain of broken dreams

A little free publicity

Tom Angleberger, who writes the Friday Q&A column for The Roanoke Times, asked us to answer a reader’s question on “How do photographers catch these fantastic images? What strikes their eye and tells them that is the picture to take?”

He was kind enough to include our comments in today’s column.

Rake some muck today

Three months ago, I stopped writing The Rant, a column for Capitol Hill Blue. I’ve quit before but always come back. This time I promised I would not.

So much for promises. The Rant returned to Blue today.

Why? Why not. It’s the role of a journalist to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable and the whorehounds who run our government are just too damn comfortable.
