Not knowing

Loki lies in my arms, wrapped in a towel, purring in halting starts and stops. The growing masses in his brain that affect his ability to walk and see also impair his vocal chords. The purr is no longer steady but sporadic.

Still, our neurologically-impaired kitten seems at peace as he lies in my arms. The towel calms him down and also protects my lap from his occasional loss of bladder control.

Comeback

Brisk morning air hit me full in the face as I walked down the driveway this morning, resuming a too-long-ago abandoned practice of morning walks. Frost-covered grass crunched under my feet as I headed across the lower lawn towards Sandy Flats Road.

Winter?

The weather station readout said 20 degrees when I got up this morning, much colder than the last few days but still not that cold by February standards. We approach the end of February and the end of a winter season where the thermometer has yet to go below zero.

Retrospect

A few days ago I put on my best self-righteous face and climbed on my high horse to bitch and moan because fellow blogger and friend David St. Lawrence called my writings left of center.

Another Friday night music venue for Floyd

If it’s getting too crowded here in Floyd County…

…you might want to move to Loving County, Texas.

From the New York Times:

How empty is Loving County?

So empty that when Sheriff Billy Burt Hopper ran for office in 2004, he and his opponent attended each other’s campaign barbecues. So empty that it cannot sustain two political parties: Republicans and Democrats all call themselves Democrats and vote in a single primary.

They just keep on rolling

The Floyd County High School girls’ varsity team routed Lebannon Friday night 68-46 to claim the region title. With a 27-0 record they head into the state finals next weekend as the favorite.

Today’s Roanoke Times has a good article on freshman Brittany Avancini, who paced the win last night with 21 points, a career high.

“I don’t know if anybody can beat them or not,” says Lebannon coach Rex Barker, “And they don’t have a senior. That’s the scarey part.”

Rolling on

Drugs and Channel 10

Channel 10 meteorologist Marc Lamarre wasn’t the only on-air personality with a drug habit. Jamey Singleton, a Rocky Mount native and another weatherman at the station, went into treatment for heroin addiction.

Floyd Countian shares in Daytona 500 win

Jimmie Johnson’s victory in the Daytona 500 Sunday has a Floyd County angle to it. Darian Grubb (right), a Floyd native, stepped in as Johnson’s crew chief after the team’s regular crew chief was ejected from the event for cheating. Grubb may stand in for the suspended Chad Knaus for another three races.
