Loki update

Loki is home. Sadly, after many, many tests, the vets and students at the Virginia-Maryland Regional Veterinary Hospital at Virginia Tech say there is nothing any of us can do but try and make him comfortable for the rest of his life although no one knows how long that will be.

The MRI found evidence of two masses on his brain, both deep inside and both inoperable. At least one is affecting is balance, motor control and vision. If the masses grow, his condition will deteriorate.

Pain

“Pain,” a sadistic Navy master chief once yelled at me, “is only the beginning.”

Pain has a way of becoming part of your life. A rambunctious youth and too many broken bones left me with severe arthritis, a number of joints that don’t work as well as they should, and some non-OEM replacement parts that don’t quite live up to manufacturer’s claims.

Waiting

Loki, our neurologically-challenged kitten, is in Virginia Tech’s Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine, undergoing tests to see if they can determine why he cannot walk without falling over.

Loki is a loving kitten but appears to have trouble seeing, falls frequently and suffers from seizures. At first our vet suspected feline epilepsy but it now appears the problem is much more serious, possibly fluid buildup or lesions on the kitten’s brains.

Meltdown

Hello, my name is Doug and I’m a workaholic. It’s been far too long since I just said “no.”

A reader correctly pointed out Saturday that the typos in Blue Ridge Muse are increasing. He’s right. It is, I fear, a byproduct of trying to do far too much in way little time.

Out of time

I should be in bed at this hour but a series of events conspired to keep me away from bed and rest. I will collapse into bed shortly but have to be up super early for a series of appointments on Friday.

It should not be a shock to my battle-worn, 58-year-old body that I’m no longer a young man capable of endless 18-hour days and a whirlwind schedule. Wasn’t supposed to work out that way when we decided to move here to the mountains. This was to be a time for relaxation. That was the plan.

020206morning.jpgMorning light and shadows through the trees of our back yard.

For a winter that started out so rough in December, January ended as one of the warmest winter months on record around here and February is starting out with higher temperatures than normal.

A cold front is headed this way but the artic blasts that so often blow down from Canada have yet to plunge the area into the kind of sub-zero conditions we are used to seeing this time of year.

However, that damn grounhog over in Pennsylvania saw his shadow this morning and that, by tradition, means six more weeks of winter. Interestingly, the weather in Punxsutawney, PA, was also far warmer than normal which means the crowd stopped worrying about the weather and started screaming something about Pittsburgh being in the Super Bowl.

Of course, is someone would just shoot that pesky rat we wouldn’t have to worry about whether or not he ever saw his shadow again.

The Floyd routine

For a small town, Floyd can offer an interesting gauntlet during any visit to the county seat. When I head into the studio on any given morning, my first stop depends on mood. It might be for a cup of strong black coffee at Roger Hollandsworth’s Village Mart on north end of town where I can add to my cholesterol count with a good ham or sausage breakfast sandwich. Or it might be Sally Walker’s Cafe del Sol for some more exotic java and a stromlette (a cross between breakfast burrito and an omelette). Sally’s place is closed this week so I’m in stromlette withdrawal.

Today marks the launch of our newly redesigned and reconstructed FloydCounty.Com, the site I believe will become the county’s premier news, information and entertainment web site.

Besides news, commentary and features, FloydCounty.Com will provide video and audio presentations, highlighting the area’s musical and artistic heritage. It will also serve as a one-stop roundout of Floyd County bloggers. Whenever Fred First, Collen Redman, David St. Lawrence, Sean Sharp or us updates their blogs, you will find the latest links on the site.
