We get the message

The folks at Virginia Living magazine, the glossy publication that glorifies a lifestyle that may or may not exist in the Old Dominion (or anywhere else on earth), must want to make sure we know that they feature Floyd in their current issue. It’s listed twice on the cover.

Calling our town "A Magical Hideout," the story says Floyd is "unlike" any other community in Virginia. Ah, the value of understatement.

Too often in both my personal and professional life, I have become the target of users.

You know the users: They’re the slick ones with the vapid smiles, the instant homilies, the constant pandering. They approach each relationship with an agenda:  Always considering the angles, always working the room, always seeking out those who can provide some sort of benefit to their goals.

NASCAR doesn’t race on Mother’s Day. That’s been a tradition for as long as I can remember.

But tradition doesn’t mean a lot in today’s commercial world and NASCAR is racing this Mother’s Day in Darlington because rain forced postponement of the scheduled race Saturday night.

Too many times in my 40-plus years as a journalist I’ve been shamed by the antics of my profession. The latest came when the national media descended on Blacksburg in he aftermath of the shootings at Virginia Tech in April.

It wasn’t enough that the Virginia Tech Community faced the horror of 32 students and faculty murdered by a fellow student. The rudeness of national anchors, famous correspondents and ambitious freelancers left a sour taste in the mouths of many Southwestern Virginians, myself included.

WTF?

Yeah, yeah, here we are rearranging the furniture and changing the wallpaper again. Well the move to WordPress was a temporary stopping point while we migrated Muse to a whole new Content Management System (CMS).

That part of the move is complete but we still have more work to do.

We will be futzing with the format and layout some more over the weekend but our goal in the end is an improved Muse and the platform on which to build a community-based site.

Stick with us. It’s going to be a fun ride.
