Another Buffalo blowout

Floyd County High School’s Buffaloes improved their record to 3-1 Friday night with a 41-0 blowout of Tunstall in a non-district game. It was also homecoming so the victory is extra sweet.
OK, if you insist

One more shot of this month’s full moon. Actually, you didn’t insist. I did. I love taking pictures of the moon. Shot with a Canon EOS-1D, Mark III, with a 300mm F2.8 lens and a 1.4 tele-extender. Exposure: 1/2000th of a second at F:4. ISO 400.
Criminal activity
Crime is on the rise in Floyd and it is destroying the county’s illusion as a safe haven.
Break-ins this week at Dollar General and Subway add to the rash of burglaries of local businesses in recent weeks.
Lots of theories about who might be behind the sharp increase: kids, drug addicts, newcomers, etc. The string of so many break-ins in such a short time suggests an organized effort.
Floyd County is still a place where many people leave their keys in their cars and their doors unlocked.
That may change.
Who’s your choice for Floyd County Commonwealth’s Attorney in the upcoming election?
* Eric Branscom\n* Stephanie Shortt\n* I’d prefer a third choice\n
Autumn moon, part deux

The moon that brightened a cloudless sky Tuesday night had to fight clouds for attention Wednesday evening but the orb that played peek-a-boo with the cloud cover gave me a chance to try out the new Canon EOS-1D Mark III and shoot the moon as it appeared along Virginia Rte. 8 near the Montgomery County line.
Shot hand-held at three-tenths of a second at F:2.8 with a Canon 24-70 zoom set at 70mm and shot at 1600 ISO with some dodging and burning in Photoshop.

Changes

Meet one of the new owners of Oddfellas Cantina in Floyd. Julie Arrington (center) and Kerry Underwood purchased the restaurant today from Rob Neukirch and Michele Morris and will be at the helm when the popular eatery opens for lunch Wednesday.
Julie has worked at Oddfellas as a waitress for a number of years and is also a Realtor and yoga instructor in Floyd. Kerry has been a familiar sight at the Oddfellas in recent days, learning the business from the inside.
As for Rob (below), he will stay busy, playing with local musicans Bernie Coveney and Chris Luster and he will star in the upcoming Mill Mountain Theater production of The Foreigner. Michele will continue her work with the Mt. Rogers Center in Wytheville.

Into the fog

Utility poles fade into the fog on a farm at the intersection of U.S. 221 and Buffalo Mountain Road in south Floyd County.
Signs of the times..past, present and future

The sign from Giles Lee Ruthrough’s old drug store and soda fountain still decorates the building that now houses Highland Hardwoods. A sign of the past. A campaign sign for Stephanie Murray Shortt, candidate for Commonwealth’s Attorney, hangs in the window. A sign of the the future? Only time (and November’s election) will tell.
A different perspective

As a photographer, I’m always looking for a different perspective to a familiar story. In this case, the traditional entrance of a high school football team by bursting through a banner to the cheers of the crowd and cheerleaders. This shot is from Friday’s Floyd County High School game with Fort Chiswell.
