The times, they are a-changing

While eating lunch at the Floyd Country Store recently, a couple who moved to the area six years ago stopped by my table to announce they were moving to Idaho next month. When I asked why, both said Floyd did not turn out to be the country mecca they hoped to find. Floyd, Carlie Jamison [...]

Floyd County High School’s junior varsity football team wrapped up its home season with a match against Patrick County Friday night. The junior Buffaloes were leading 22-6 at halftime when I had to leave the game for another event. More photos and Roger Mannon’s full story in next week’s Floyd Press.

Floyd is no longer just a Friday night town

For many years, visitors flocked to Floyd on Friday nights for the Jamboree and pretty much ignored the town for the other six days of the week. No more. This is not your daddy’s Floyd…or your granddaddy’s for that matter. Music will resonate through the town Thursday night with the free concert series at the [...]

Maybe that’s one of the reasons [...]

The street is the scene on a Floyd Friday night

Any way you slice it, Friday nights in Floyd remain a magical time with street music and the sounds of music ranging from bluegrass at the Friday Night Jamorbree to classical guitar at Oddfellas and African folk songs at Dogtown Roadhouse. For many, it’s the street music that makes a trip to Floyd on Friday [...]

Yeah we need the rain but…

Another day, another round of storms, another flood watch. Another day of watching helplessly as my driveway washes away and ends up somewhere in Franklin County. Another day when another tree will probably fall and/or more limbs will come cascading down. If I dare complain about the weather over a breakfast table at Blue Ridge [...]

Raindrops keep falling on my dread

Like an idiot, I believed the “meteorologists” who predicted Monday’s thunderstorms would strike in late afternoon so I rode my motorcycle to my mother’s assisted living facility in Radford to pick up some clothes to take to her at the rehab center where she is trying to recover from a broken hip. Dark, ominous clouds [...]

Back to school

After a brutal winter that left some Southwestern Virginia school systems closed for an entire month, administrators aren’t taking any chances. Students return to school in Floyd County this morning, joining their counterparts in other counties who started even earlier. The early start will give school systems plenty of “snow days” to bank is another [...]
