Satchel Paige once said dealing with getting old was simply a case of mind over matter.

“If I don’t mind,” he said. “It don’t matter.”

After nearly two weeks of battling exhaustion, dehydration, anemia and bronchitis, I feel the ravages of age and I’m sorry Satchel, but it does matter.

Then I logged on to my email this morning to find a message from an old friend.

“Happy Birthday…you old fart,” it read.

Damn near forgot. Birthday today. The 59th one.

Sumbitch. After 12 days of battling the infirmities of age, this is not the best time to turn 59.

H.L. Mencken said “if I’d known I was gonna live this long I’d have taken better care of myself.” Many others stole the phrase from Mencken (the latest being Yankees slugger Mickey Mantle shortly before he died).

Somebody else once said: “You’re only as old as you feel.”

If that’s true I’m in real trouble.
