Football, poker run, music and more for the weekend

Looking for something to do this weekend? There’s plenty in the mix in and around the area.

Floyd County High School kicks off its varsity football season at 7 p.m. tongiht with a home game opener against Christiansburg.  Hopefully, the team will find a defense that went AWOL in last week’s benefit scrimmage against Grayson County and the offensive line can open up some lanes for rushing leader Dorian Harris.

In the mood for music?  Take in William Walter & Swamp Candy at Dogtown Roadhouse or the Dan Chitwood Band at Oddfellas. Over at the Country Store, crowd favorites like The Black Twig Pickers and Clyde Williams provide bluegrass at the Friday Night Jamboree.

Want to help Floyd County Volunteer Fire Department? Fire up your motorcycle or classic car and head over to Floyd Elementary Store at 9 a.m. Saturday for the Station 1 poker run.  Registration opens at 9 and it’s kickstands up at 11.

More music Saturday:  At the Country Store, a tribute to Chet Atkins, featuring Bill Adams and Bob Thomas at noon and Upland Express headlines in a 7:30 p.m. show.  Sally Walker will offer her mix of blues and ballads at Oddfellas.

  1. Yes – another busy weekend in Floyd, but Doug you missed one!

Folks can also come out for the original melodrama “Daisy’s Dilemma at the Diamond Duchess Hotel”, presented this Friday and Saturday evenings (August 26 and 27) at 7:30 pm at the Oak Grove Pavilion behind Zion Lutheran Church. Admission is free; a freewill offering will be collected for the six local non-profit organizations chosen this summer by the Pavilion committee.
