Jerry Leiber and Billy Edd Wheeler wrote the country song “Jackson” in 1963 and since then it has been recorded by an odd assortment of artists, including Wheeler, then The Kingston Trio and later by Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazelwood.

But it took Johnny Cash and June Carter to turn the song into a hit, reaching number two on the country charts and capturing a Grammy for best duet performance.

Covers of “Jackson” cropped up more than once during the Johnny Cash birthday celebration this past Saturday at The Floyd Country Store but the rendition by Charlottesville-based performers Christian Breeden and Kristin Rae Bowden was, shell we say, unique.  Breeden, a Southern rocker from the band American Dumpster, and Bowden, an Elon College music grad and folk singer, seem — on paper at least — an odd pairing the capacity crowd at the birthday bash found their performance entertaining.
