Legendary Floyd County fiddle maker Arthur Conner (right) was born in 1924 and celebrated his 83rd birthday Saturday with a party and a lot of pickin’ and grinnin’ at Scott Perry’s Pickin’ Porch.

A number of Conner’s friends and fellow musicians turned out to help celebrate and music filled the air on Willis Street and young and old picked and strummed on guitars, fiddles and mandolins, some playing on instruments that Connor made.

Conner’s annual birthday bash at the Pickin’ Porch has become a traditional gathering of area musicians who jam throughout the afternoon before chowing down at a cookout.

The support and respect that many musicians share for each other is obvious at gatherings like this and is a major part of what makes Floyd and it’s long and colorful history of mountain music so unique.
