Sway Katz rocks the Pine as thunder and lightning rock the surrounding skies

Big band music rocked the Pavilion at Pine Tavern Saturday Night as lightning lit up the sky and ominous clouds circled the area but the threat of another storm sweeping through Floyd County could not dampen the enthusiasm of those who braved the heat, humidity and possibility of bad weather.

The Roanoke-based band, which includes Floyd musician John Winnicki, mixes big band swing, jazz, pop, funk and more in a fast-paced show.  I first heard them at the Pine several years ago and always try to take in their shows when they return to the area.

I suspect the weather had some impact on attendance.  Many Floyd Countians were still coping with the loss of power and damage from the high winds that swept through the area Friday night.  Some 2,700 county homes and businesses remained dark when the band began playing Saturday night and that number grew overnight to 2,984 by Sunday morning. At 7 a.m. Sunday 199,380 Appalachian Power customers were still waiting for their electricity to come back on.  In Roanoke, 46 percent of the city’s residents and businesses remained powerless.

Here are some preliminary photos.  Shot a lot of video as well and will try to have the first clip on-line sometime Sunday night.
