Friday night lights

A good place to see Floyd in action is at a football game on a Friday night.

Football analysts often say the crowd at a home game is the “12th man” on the field and supporters of the Floyd County High School Buffaloes are no exception to that rule.

I’ve been shooting FCHS sports for The Floyd Press week in and week out since returning to the county in 2004.  It’s some of the most fun I have a photographer and as a Floyd Countian.  The enthusiasm of students, parents and supporters is infectious.

These photos were shot in 2009 and were not part of any game images provide to the Press.  I came across them while looking for photos for the parents of a student who played that year.

But these images could be from any year.  The support and enthusiasm of Floyd County sports fans is a constant of life here in the hills, just as coming out in droves to support those in need or other worthy causes.  That is something that defines Floyd and adds to the uniqueness of this community.

I hope to keep shooting events like this as long as my ancient legs, bum hips and bad back hold out.

It beats the hell out of covering politics, government or wars.
