One down, one to go

Floyd won a hard-fought state semi-final game against a pesky George Mason 66-62 at the Siegel Center in Richmond Saturday afternoon.

Missed shots from the floor and at the free throw line in the first half kept the game closer than it should have been. The Lady Buffs led by three at the half. But Britney Avancini (above) delivered 31 points the shots started dropping in the second half as Floyd improved its shooting percentage from 37.9 to 42.9 percent and the free throw percentage improved from 33.3 percent in the first half to 70.6 percent in the second.

Floyd never opened up a lead of more than eight points.  Molly Brown hit a critical three pointer late in the second half and then Avancini stepped into front of a George Mason pass and brought it down the court for a crucial layup and Floyd held on to take the victory.

Floyd faces Lancaster for the State Championship at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Siegel Center.
