Vimeo, the video sharing service that many of us in the business use, changed its name today to Vimeow and its focus to — you guessed it — cats.
In other words, April Fool.
We love April Fools day. Our favorite all time joke was on April 1, 1996 when Taco Bell announced it had purchased the Liberty Bell from the U.S. government to help — among other things — balance the budget and and was changing the focus of all of its fast food restaurant to a Liberty-themed “Taco Liberty Bell.”
The company bought full-page ads in major American newspapers and told the story so convincingly that members of Congress took to the floor of the Capitol to denounce the act the the commercialism of a national treasure.
Over at the White House, Bill Clinton’s press secretary quickly figured out it was an April Fools’ joke and went along with the gag, announcing that Ford Motor Company was interesting in buying the Lincoln Memorial.
It wasn’t until the afternoon when the company admitted the whole thing was an elaborate — and expensive — April Fool’s joke.
