Appalachian Power now admits to ‘significant’ power outages

070612linemanAfter first claiming power outages from Thursday’s storms and high winds were “minor,” Appalachian Power Company now admits the loss of electricity by its Virginia customers are “significant: with 56,000 customers remaining powerless in the early afternoon.

Although power was restored to most of the nearly 300 Floyd County customers who woke up in the dark early Friday, more than 20,000 remained without power in Roanoke city and county shortly after 1 p.m. with thousands still without electricity in Montgomery County and parts of Southwestern Virginia.

Story still developing.
