Another billionaire buys a newspaper

In what seems to be a new fad among billionaires in this country, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is buying The Washington Post for $250 million.

Bozos joins other rich types who adding newspapers to their list of acquisitions: Boston Red Sox owner John Henry, who bought The Boston Globe last week, and Warren Buffet, who is buying up newspapers left in right, including The Floyd Press as part of a purchase of Media General papers last years, and The Roanoke Times from Landmark Communications earlier this year.

News of Bezos surprise purchase of The Washington Post came on the same day that Covington’s daily newspaper announced it is cutting production back to two days a week.

Newspapers around the country are in severe financial trouble.  Some friends of mine lost their jobs when The New Orleans Times-Picayune cut back to three days a week and another friend went on the unemployment line when the Chicago Sun Times shut down its photo department and told reporters to take news photos with their iPhones.

At times, it seems like I will outlive my chosen profession.
