After Wednesday’s video about traffic in Floyd, we’ve received a number of emails and comments from readers who say something along the lines of “yeah, maybe traffic in Floyd is getting worse but it’s still not as bad as (insert name of town or event here).”
Mentioned often is the annual Carroll County Flea Market and Gun Show, held over Labor Day weekend in Hillsville. That’s a time when a normally small town is turned into a traffic and pedestrian dominated nightmare.
With the flea market and gun show coming up in little over a week, we will get another does of what a big annual event can do to an otherwise small town. Of course, Hillsville already had traffic from the intersection of three major U.S. highways (221, 52 and 58) along with Interstate 77 passing nearby.
Hillsville also has a bypass, which helps ease traffic somewhat but which also creates complaints from some business owners who say it directs potential customers away.
You hear some of the same complaints in Meadows of Dan where a four-land bypass of U.S. 58 circumvents a town that is even smaller than Floyd.
1 thought on “Yes, traffic could be a lot worse”
Meadows of Dan, with only one major road, is easier to bypass than Floyd. Do we bypass Floyd with 221A or 8A or both. The best way to kill a town is to bypass it.
