With temperatures only slightly above freezing Wednesday morning, ice if forming on trees, black ice threatens roads while bridges and secondary roads have slick spots.
Schools originally announced they would open two hours late Wednesday but then closed as Floyd County and most of Southwestern Virginia lie just southeast of another winter storm bringing havoc to the Midwest and Northeast.
The latest winter storm is called Nika and brings another “wintry mix” to areas of the country.
While our area will miss the brunt of the storm, enough rain has fallen and, combined with cold temperatures in higher elevation, the wet conditions mean ice and hazards on the roadways.
