Floyd County High School’s girls’ varsity basketball squad scored back-to-back wins Thursday and Friday nights in the county’s Tip Off tournament, edging William Fleming 51-49 the first night and then outlasting Hidden Valley 57-46 in the tournament finale Friday.
Senior Brittany Bourne led the scoring in the final game with 17 points while Carmen Bolt added 16. Bolt also led the scoring the first game.
In Thursday’s game, Bolt led the scoring with 16 points and Bourne added 11.
The non-district wins give the team momentum as they try to build a winning record and vie to return to the State Championship final four in Richmond for a fifth straight year.
Surprisingly, attendance at the tournament games was sparse — lots of empty seats in the stands — something not normally seen at a Floyd County athletic event.
Maybe it was the cold weather.
Maybe it’s the economy.
Whatever caused the problem, let’s hope attendance improves as the season progresses.
