Miguel Policarpo, Floyd County High School’s tough and wiry 106-pound wrestler, made it to the semi-finals of the Virginia High School League state wrestling championships in Salem Saturday before falling 6-3 to Bayne Gordon of Clarke County.
Policarpo was one of two wrestlers from Floyd County to compete at the state level this year and the only one to make it past the first round. He won over Kyle Sisk of Strasburg in the quarterfinals.
Policarpo and Jeff Keyton of Floyd County High School qualified for the state tournament. Keyton went down in the first found of the 285-pound class. Floyd finished in a three-way tie for 24th with Grayson County and Martinsville in the tournament at Salem Civic Center.
