Floyd County woke up Tuesday morning to temperatures in the low to mid 20s and a “Winter Weather Advisory” in effect until noon with the potential for freezing drizzle, frozen fog and the danger of black ice.

“Untreated roads and surfaces will become coated with a sheet of ice making travel very hazardous,” The National Weather Service in Blacksburg said in a warning statement. “Be prepared for slippery roads and limited visibilities.  Use caution while driving.”

Added the NWS:  “A wedge of cold, moist air will remain firmly entrenched across the region through much of Tuesday…and perhaps even into early Wednesday.”

With a projected high of 41 before the thermometer dips back to freezing at 32 overnight and a 40 percent chance of drizzle overnight, the slick conditions would remain into drive-time Wednesday.

Floyd County schools were scheduled to open two hours late on Tuesday but previous patterns this year said the delay could turn into a closing once someone ventured out and found slick roads.  Both happened.  Schools are closed for the second-straight day this week.

In early morning, a tractor trailer hit black ice on U.S. 220 near its intersection of Interstate 581, crashed into a concrete barrier and closed both northbound lanes.  State police report a higher-than-normal number of calls about wrecks and fender-benders.

“It’s messy out there,” reported Carroll County-based truck driver Wayne Hastings after a drive on I-77 and I-81 Tuesday  morning.
