Look like cooler weather ahead but not a lot of rain, except for a light stretch late Monday or early Tuesday.

But it could be much colder by the weekend as October heads into its second half.  Expect to need a coat by Friday night for the Floyd County High School homecoming against Bassett.

Fall colors are moving in fast in most area and the viewing time could be short because of rapidly falling leaves.

This week’s cool mornings and mild to warm afternoons should continue the process of colorful fall foliage becoming more widespread in our region, with the higher elevations (2,500 feet and higher) nearing peak by next weekend and more color popping out in lower elevations as well. There is a chance of some showers, mostly light, late Monday into early Tuesday with the next in the series of reinforcing cold fronts, but otherwise it is expected to be dry through at least Thursday. The season’s first serious push of frosty cold may occur by the weekend, so be prepared for that if you have outdoor plants.

Autumn is upon us.  So is election season, showcased by the overwhelming litter of yard signs that line the roads, crowd the intersections and openly violate Virginia law prohibiting such displays on rights-of-way and other public areas.

An interesting statistic from the Washington Center of Politics and Journalism, which found no surveys or polls that showed any decisions by voters swayed or determined by yard signs and billboards.

The center, though, found a lot of anger from the littering effect of the signs.  Yet every candidate pushes volunteers to “get out the signs” for every election.
