They predicted a blizzard in Southwestern Virginia but what arrived in and around Floyd County was less than a foot of snow and the primary roads were clear on Sunday, the day after the big, two-day storm called Jonas.

A drive around the county found some rough spots on secondary roads and schools remain closed in Floyd County and many other Southwestern jurisdictions on Monday.

Further north, the storm unleashed its full fury, dumping more than two feet of snow on Washington, DC, and clogging New York City, which banned all but emergency traffic in Manhattan and other areas of the state.

Even though Floyd County got less, it will still take a few days for the area to return to normal. Temperatures will rise through the week, culminating with highs in the 50s and sunny for the weekend. Rain is forecast for Tuesday and that, with warmer temperatures, will start turning the snow into slush and mud.
