Goodbye Cafe del Sol, hello Dogtown Pizza

Cafe del Sol: The lights go out for good
Cafe del Sol: The lights go out for good

Cafe del Sol will not reopen. Frank and Sally Walker have put the equipment up for sale and will be moving out of the space in the Winter Sun building this weekend.

Sun owner Anga Miller confirmed today that Dogtown Pizza will take over the space that has housed the popular Floyd Coffee shop for the past five years and that the owners of Dogtown will also run the Sun Music Hall.

The change reduces Floyd’s coffee shop count by one and adds the second establishment offering pizza so far in this new year, joining Mickey G’s. Pizza Inn also offers pizza and related dishes.

Attempts to sell the Cafe fell through over the weekend and left Cafe del Sol’s owners with no chance to continue the business.

“It was a good run,” Frank Walker told us Wednesday.

Dogtown Pizza’s stone pizza oven became popular during the summer and fall months last year when they set up operations in a parking lot on Locust Street on Friday nights.  Miller says the new shop will offer much more.

Adds Miller:

While certainly we are all very sad to be losing Cafe Del Sol, I am also happy to report that DogTown Pizza has just signed a lease to take over the Cafe space, as well as the Sun Music Hall.

Jon Roberts and Scott Smith have wonderful plans for a complete renovation of the cafe space that includes building a wood fired pizza oven and focusing on locally grown food, as well as local beer & wine offerings.

They also hope to offer early morning freshly made coffee & donuts, great lunches, and create an evening atmosphere that will entice us all to visit for a relaxing after work meal.

Their plans also include enlarging the cafe area, including a smaller stage area that will focus on presenting our very talented and diverse local musicians, as well as begin offering a wonderful line up of regional and national acts on the larger stage.

We are all very excited about these upcoming changes here at Wintersun!

(Note: Miller’s comments were part of a comment posted to another article. We decided to incorporate the comment into this update. Our thanks to Anga for the update.)

  1. I will miss Cafe del Sol! It was a refuge, a place to land….a place to meet. It was a place to see good art, hear some music, have a laugh. They named a salad after me, by god. Cheers and farewell. I wish Dogtown Pizza all the best.

  2. Like Rio, we will miss the Cafe but I’m very glad to hear that Dogtown is setting up shop and plans to continue offering live music, good food, and cold beer. Any idea of a tentative opening date?

You just can’t beat the location and pure awesome of that sundeck on a Friday night in the warmer months. What a great place to spend an evening surrounded by music, family, and friends in the heart of a classic blue ridge mountain town.

Best of luck to Sally and Frank. Congrats on leasing the space so quickly Anga. In this market, I’m sure you realize how fortunate you are.

    Yay for more entertainment options.

  3. We wish the owners of Cafe del Sol the very best moving forward and thank them for the time they served the community with great food, java and art. I can’t think of a more appropriate new tenant than Dogtown Pizza! This is such an exciting development.
