School ends today in Floyd County, which seems out of sequence since seniors graduated last Saturday.

The Floyd County High School varsity baseball team’s state tournament hopes ended over the Memorial Dau weekend with a 5-0 loss to Randolph-Henry in the 2A West Regionals at Charlotte Courthouse.

Buffalo standouts in track have one last shot for the season at the Virginia High School League state matches at Radford University on Friday and Saturday.

Returning students get an increasingly shorter summer recess. Classes resume on August 11.

For those of us who spend a lot of time photographing high school sports, the summer recess provides time to get cameras cleaned and serviced for the coming season and time to concentrate on summertime entertainment.

The summer festival season kicked off with Chantilly Farms Bluegrass and BBQ event over Memorial Day weekend.  Concerts at Oak Grove Pavilion in Floyd feature crowd favorite White Top Mountain Band Saturday night.

FloydFest arrives in July, followed by the Old Time Fiddlers’ Convention in Galax.  Music lights up Locust Street in Floyd on Friday nights, Hotel Floyd features free concerts at their pavilion on Thursday nights.

The Crooked Road’s Mountains of Music Homecoming Festival brings bluegrass legend Jesse McReynolds to The Floyd County Store on June 16 for a Thursday night event.
