Floyd County’s Varsity Buffaloes take the football field Friday night in Hillsville to open the 2016 season against Carroll County without a a familiar face on the sidelines  after the school suspended longtime coach Winfred Beale from coaching duties for seven days on Monday.

School principal Scott Watson cited personnel privacy in refusing to discuss details on what led to the suspension of the popular coach who has been a fixture in the school’s football program for 36 years.

“We;re going to make adjustments and move on,” he told The Floyd Press.

The suspension ends Sunday and applies only Beale’s football activities for the high school.  He is also a teacher and he was not suspended from his duties in the classroom.

School superintendent Kevin Harris said he was “aware of the action” by the principal and said he supported Watson’s moves.  He added that the outcome of the events that led to the suspension are up to Watson and athletic director Travis Cantrell.

Harris told the newspaper that he hopes Beale returns to his coaching duties for a successful season.
