Floyd County High School’s varsity basketball Lady Buffs fought a determined Magna Vista squad at home Friday night before icing the game when Abi Belshan stole the ball from the Warriors with 16 seconds to go and drove the court before a clinching score to give Floyd a 50-45 win.
A big night for Belshan led scoring with 20 points for the night, including a trio of three-point goals and eight rebounds.
Floyd took the led with a three point shot from Belshan that started a Lady Buffs sccoring run that extended to 11-2 in the opening three minutes. The Warriors closed the score to 14-11 with three free throws from a penalty at the end of the first quarter.
Foyd increased the lead to 25-17 at the half and 41-30 by the end of the third quarter. With time running out, the Warriors closed in to within three, 48-45, and had the ball when Belshan’s key steal and score added the closing shot that protected the win.
A dominating win by the JV Lady Buffs earlier in the evening became obvious early when they led Magna Vista 21-0 at the end of the first quarter. The Warriors’ only score in the first half was a single point free-throw in the second quarter and Floyd went into the locker room with a 38-1. That lead became 52-4 at the end of the third quarter with Floyd’s JV team polishing off Magna Vista 65-6 at game’s end.
