Dustin Thompson of the Buffaloes drives for a goal against Giles.

For three and half quarters of the opening round of 3A Conference 32 high school basketball playoff game, the Floyd County Buffaloes led the Giles Spartans Monday night in Pearisburg, but 23 fourth quarter points almost doubled the 12 of FCHS, eliminating the Buffs from state playoff contention for this season.

Floyd led by more than 10 points several times in the opening half, but the Spartans, outscored the Buffaloes 40 to 25 in the second half and took the game 65-56 by the end.

Dustin Thompson of the Buffaloes scored a game high of 23 points, including five three-pointers and Cayden Sutphin downed 11.

The Lady Buffaloes open their conference hopes Thursday night against Giles at James River High at Buchanan in a semi-final match at 7 p.m.

An unhappy Floyd coach Brian Harman is tagged for a technical foul in the second half.
