District Semi-Final Win for Lady Buffaloes

Mihaela Thompson: Eight points for the night.
Aimee Whitlow: 21 points, including five three-pointers.

At halftime Monday night in the Three Rivers District Semi-Final match against Glenvar’s Highlanders, the Floyd County Lady Buffaloes found themselves tied at 22 points each.

Free throws weren’t dropping in for the Buffs and short shots came up short.  Key three pointers did keep the team in the game but the same kind of shots by the Highlanders kept them within one point at the end of the first quarter and tied up the game at the half.

In the second half, the Lady Buffaloes went on a tear, outscoring Glenvar 26-9 in the third quarter and 12-8 in the final period to give Floyd at 60-39 win and a trip to Hillsville Tuesday night for the district championship against top-seeded Carroll County at 6 p.m.

Amy Whitlow’s five three-pointers helped and she finished the night with 21 points, followed by eight each from Amy Belshan, Cassidy Pratt and Michaela Thompson.

The team also improved on its foul-line percentages in the second half and scored more short shots and layups.

A solid second half sealed the win before a moderately-sized home crowd.

After Tuesday’s district final,, the Lady Buffs get a short rest before opening Regional Tournament Play against James River at home on Friday.

The boys, who lost the opening round of district playoffs against James River, opens Regional Tournament Play Friday against Chatham at Chatham High at 6:30 p.m.

Abi Belshan: Eight points.
Cassidy Pratt: An eight point night.
