Downed trees, a struggle to restore power

With Appalachian Power work crews struggling to restore power to thousands of Floyd County residents and thousands more throughout the utility’s service area in Virginia, cold county occupants struggle with no electricity, no heat and frigid conditions.

Estimates for restoring power for many dark homes and businesses say 10 p.m. Saturday is the target for restoration of power in Floyd County.

At 11 a.m. Friday, 5,982 customers remained in the dark — an outage total topped only by Carroll County with 6,011.  Floyd topped 9,000 outages 24 hours earlier.

Floyd County schools remained closed Friday and some businesses stayed dark without power.

APCO reports 1,000 workers on the job and has added crews from Kentucky Power.
