After a game-winning lay-up 10.6 seconds left of the Region 2C Semi-Final at Salem High School late Saturday afternoon, sophomore Peyton Grim gave the Floyd County High School Lady Buffaloes a berth in the state tournament.
Grim’s two-pointer gave the Lady Buffs a 48-47 victory over Gretna as the team’s defense controlled the final few seconds of a hard-fought match.
The Lady Buffaloes, known for a grueling one-on-one defensive style of play, switched to a zone defense against the Lady Hawks but led the game 13-11 at the end of the first quarter, then 26-22 at the half but Gretna narrowed that lead to just one by the end of the third quarter.
The Lady Buffs led by just two when the Lady Hawks Dogwood District play of the year Makeyla Mease hit a three-pointer that put her team up 47-46 with just 24.6 seconds left in the game. Aimee Whitlow, who already had 20 points to lead scoring for the night, passed to Grim, who “knocked by layout down.”
“I passed to Peyton because I had confidence she’d make it,” Whitlow told The Roanoke Times after the game. Grim finished the night with 18 points, including that decisive final score, along with three 3-pointers. Whitlow had four trios as part of her 20 points.
Floyd coach Ross Snead said missed free throws by the Lady Buffs made the score a lot closer than necessary.
The Lady Buffaloes face Martinsville in the regional finale Monday at Magna Vista High School in Ridgeway at 6:30 pm but their win Saturday also gave them a guaranteed berth in the state Class 2 Quarterfinals.
