In search of a Floyd County yard sale on Labor Day

On U.S. 221 in Hillsville on flea market weekend.

Took a motorcycle ride up U.S. 221 from Floyd towards Willis Monday in search of what used to be a string of yard sales on Labor Day.

Instead, I found yard sales taking the Labor Day off.

Yes, there were a few yard sales here and there on Saturday, but fewer ones on Sunday and virtually none on Labor Day 2019.  A private resident before Slaughters Supermarket, where used equipment of displayed year round, had a few more items but no visitors.

At the lot next to Slaughters, home to many Labor Day weekend yard sales over the years, one vendor worked at setting up a table.   From that point northward on 221, until I turned right on Alum Ridge Road just north of Willis, no yard sales could be found.

Same for all of Alum Ridge road from U.S. 221 to Virginia Route 8.  Turned South on Rte. 8 and looked for yard sale activity.  None.

Maybe everyone was in Hilllsville for the final day of the Carroll County Yard Sale and Gun Show that brings thousands to the town  Perhaps, but I haven’t talked to anyone this weekend who said they had fought the crowds there.

Floyd Baptist Church had a yard sale Saturday, but was elsewhere and missed it. I’m sure a lot of folks found bargains.  I haven’t looking for anything but wanted to shoot some news photos of yard sales.

Oh well.  Maybe next year.
