Failed extra points made the difference in the first win of the season for the Floyd County High School Buffaloes varsity football team Friday night in Stuart against Patrick County’s Cougars.
Of the two touchdowns each scored by the teams, three ended with failed extra points but the successful PAT of Floyd proved the one-point margin of victory over Patrick.
The Cougars took the lead in the first quarter with a running touchdown with a failed kick, but Floyd led in the second quarter at halftime when Avery Chaffin tossed a 15-yard pass to Tyler Fenton and the score stood at 7-6.
Patrick County retook the lead in the third quarter on a passing touchdown but again failed to score a PAT so the score stood at 12-7 until the fourth quarter when Chaffin hit his second touchdown pass of the night, this one to Braden Chaffin. An attempted two-point conversion failed and the score was 13-12 and Floyd held on to put its record in this young season at 1-1.
Roger Mannon covered the game for The Floyd Press and his story will be a sports highlight in the next edition. Photos for this article came from last week’s season opener in Floyd. Our congratulations to the Buffaloes for the win.
