Floyd County High School’s varsity Buffaloes football squad took an early lead over Giles in the first drive Friday night before the Spartans tied the game, then took over the lead before dropping behind again by halftime and didn’t score again until the closing minutes.

By then, it was too little, too late.

Coach Winifred Beale summed it up the 36-29 loss that gave the Spartans their first win of the season:  “We gave up too many big plays.”

The loss gives the Buffaloes a 3-3 overall record and 1-1 in district play.

For a while, Floyd was in control, driving 85 yards in their opening possession before taking a 7-0 lead after a seven-pass from Avery Chafin to Caleb Webb but Giles answered back with an 84-yard run right up the middle of the Buffaloes defense to make to 13-7.

After trading touchdowns, Floyd again had the lead 21-20 but Giles connected with a 31-yard pass play lead 27-21.  Kicker Preston Whitlock of the Spartans extended the lead going into the half to 30-21 right before halftime.

Whitlock’s foot added two more long three-pointers to extend the lead to 15 points — 36-21 — and Floyd didn’t score until late in the fourth quarter when Chafin tossed a two-year pass to Tyler Fenton, then threw another successful pass to add a two-point conversion to cut the Spartan lead t 36-29.

The Buffaloes had one more chance but Whitelock’s foot put them on the one-yard line with and they failed to move the ball as time ran out.

Players displayed pink on parts of their uniforms and pink was the color of the night in the stands in support of cancer patients.
