Burglars hit one of our neighbors over the weekend, bringing Floyd County’s growing crime problem closer to home.
It’s not the first time thieves hit our neighborhood. The concrete dragon weighing more than 1,000 pounds is still missing after it disappeared from our front yard last year. At the time, the sheriff’s department chief investigator felt it was a prank.
It wasn’t.
Crime is rising steadily in our quiet little burg with home break-ins becoming a regular part of the weekly police report in The Floyd Press. A county grand jury earlier this month indicted several young county residents in a theft ring that has plagued the area in recent months. Offspring of some well-known Floyd County families are involved.
The increase in drug use is considered a prime reason for the upswing in thefts. That would seem to jibe with a report this week from Social Services Director Carl Ayers that the children removed from their homes and placed in foster care has doubled and in all but one case drug abuse by the parents was the primary cause.
We are increasingly becoming a society that is out of control and the chaos is not limited to the cities and areas far removed from Floyd County.
The problem has come home to roost.

Unemployment, a sense of despair, and a bleak future do have consequences. I read last night that .1% (one tenth of one percent) of Americans (130,000 people) claim 11% of the national income. Those at the bottom are going to “redistribute” the wealth, whether those who are better off like it or not. It wouldn’t hurt to stop calling Obama a socialist and start reflecting on what is going to happen if working people don’t have an opportunity for a better future – the rise in crime and drug use is a direct result of economic hardship.
