Spoken word is exactly that — people speaking words written either by themselves or someone else. The Floyd Writer’s Circle started doing Spoken Word at various venues in Floyd and those early gatherings have blossomed into open mike nights at Cafe del Sol.
Saturday night’s program inclueded selections from the Floyd County High School forensics team (right). Forensics have come a long way since I participated as a member from 1963-65, debating such topics as “Resolved: That the United States should participate in a European-style Common Market for the Western Hemisphere.” These kids are good. I doubt I could have made the team at that level of competition.
Saturday’s offerings included many local writers who often read — Fred First, Colleen Redman, Jayn Avery, et. al — but also allowed us to hear from David St. Lawrence (above), one of the county’s newest residents and yet another blogger in what is become a county of them.
