A warmer than normal November has not meant a let up from the rains that have drenched Virginia and the Carolinas for most of the year. Two days of heavy rains are forecast to precede the Thanksgiving holiday weekend and unseasonably warm weather will greet the shoppers who head out to the malls on Friday.

Enjoy it while it lasts. Winter is still coming.

We met on the morning train that ran from St. Louis to Chicago. A legal secretary, she caught the train in Springfield to deliver the papers to the Cook County Courthouse in the Windy City. I had to spend two days in Chicago covering a meeting of the Illinois Board of Higher Education.

Contrived but still an exciting race

NASCAR’s made-for-television “chase for the cup” this season seems more suited for the hype of wrestling than racing but the contrived 10-race shootout produced an exciting finale Sunday in Homestead as Kurt Busch overcame a lost tire and a botched pit stop to win the Nextel Cup by eight points over Jimmie Johnson in the tightest finish ever in the points.
