A dysfunctional good time was had by all

Pine Tavern rocked Saturday night with the sounds of Sonic Safari as the popular county eatery celebrated its second annual Dysfunctional Family Picnic.

The event, conceived by local raconteur Tom Ryan, who tends bar at the Pine on Friday and Saturday nights, included incredible gumbo, peel and eat shrimp, and a lot of dancing and partying.

Ryan had also planned the first annual gathering of Floyd County "All Stars" musicians but had to cancel that event because too many of the proposed all stars aren’t speaking to each other — a malady that seems to affect musicians.

Maybe he should have included them in the Dysfunctional Family Picnic.

The sounds of thunder

Many residents of Floyd heard the rumble and roar of several hundred motorcycles before they hit town. Led by State Police motor officers, the riders stopped at the Exxon E-Z Stop to check in on the first leg of the Second Annual Poker Run and Charity Ride to benefit the families of slain Montgomery County Police Officer Eric Sutphin and hospital security guard Derrick McFarland.

The riders left Montgomery County Regional Hospital Saturday morning and headed down Rte. 8 to Floyd.  Riders included Floyd Countians, including Sheriff Shannon Zeman and Chief Investigator Jeff Dalton, both avid motorcyclists.

After the rest stop, the riders headed South on U.S. 221 to Hillsville. I rode along and then split off to join friends for brunch at Shoneys near I-77 while the riders continued on down Rte. 11 towards Pulaski and Dublin.

After brunch, the four of us who split off enjoyed a spirited ride back to Floyd on a beautiful Saturday afternoon.
